Depression Therapy in Florida and New York

Online Counseling for Depression, Burnout, and Emotional Numbness

Depression can feel crushing and isolating. It can feel like deep, sad, hopelessness, or it may feel like emotional numbness, apathy, burnout, difficulty functioning, or feeling far away and shut off from yourself or who you used to be.

You may find yourself struggling to get through daily responsibilities, withdrawing from people and relationships you care about, feeling disconnected from things you used to enjoy, or carrying a constant sense of fatigue and emptiness.

I provide online depression therapy for adults throughout Florida and New York, helping clients better understand what may be contributing to depression, reconnect with themselves, and move toward meaningful, sustainable change.

What Depression Can Look Like

Depression is not always obvious, and can be more than constant sadness.

You might experience:

  • Difficulty sleeping at night or excessive sleep during the day
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities that you would have normally enjoyed
  • Feelings of guilt, shame, or uselessness
  • Almost daily fatigue or low energy
  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decisions
  • Loss of appetite or weight, or for some people, increased appetite or weight
  • Thoughts of death or suicide with or without a plan
  • Feeling stuck, overwhelmed, numb, or “shut down”
  • Isolation; “pulling away” or avoiding social activities
  • Feeling sad, empty, or hopeless

For many people, depression can set in without an obvious triggering event, especially around the time of puberty, but onset can happen at any age. For others, it emerges after major life changes, burnout, grief or loss, medical challenges, trauma, chronic stress, or long periods of emotional strain.

Trauma, Stress, and Depression Are Often Connected

Depression can develop when the nervous system has been under stress for too long. Trauma, medical experiences, grief, chronic overwhelm, emotionally invalidating environments, or persistent life stress can leave people feeling emotionally depleted, disconnected, or hopeless. This creates feelings of powerlessness, which I think of as being at the core of anger and depression.

Depression may be a sign that your nervous system has shifted into a kind of protective shutdown after having to deal with prolonged stress or pain. This doesn’t mean you’re lazy, weak, or failing; the context of life events and circumstances help symptoms make sense and can create a clearer picture of how to start to feel better.

Therapy can help you better understand what contributes to depression while building a path toward healing and recovery.

My Approach to Depression Therapy

I take a trauma-informed, collaborative approach to depression treatment that focuses on understanding your experience.

Depending on your needs, therapy may include:

  • Exploring the underlying causes of depression
  • Identifying patterns that reinforce hopelessness or avoidance
  • Building an understanding of stress, trauma, and nervous system responses
  • Processing painful or overwhelming experiences
  • Building self-compassion and reducing shame
  • Reconnecting with meaning, relationships, and daily routines and enrichment
  • Developing coping strategies that feel realistic and sustainable

I don’t push or encourage clients to force positivity or pretend difficult emotions do not exist. Instead, my goal in therapy is to help reduce the intensity and persistence of depression while helping you reconnect with yourself, your values, and the parts of life that matter most.

Online therapy can also allow clients to:

  • Attend sessions from home

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work with depression?

Yes. I work with adults experiencing depression, low motivation, hopelessness, emotional numbness, burnout, and related concerns.

Is depression always caused by a trauma?

No, not always. Depression can develop for many reasons, including stress, grief, burnout, life circumstances, medical issues, or trauma.

Do you offer EMDR for depression?

Sometimes, but not typically. When depression is connected to unresolved traumatic or distressing experiences, EMDR may be clinically appropriate.

Is online therapy effective for depression?

Research suggests telehealth therapy can be effective for depression and may be comparable to in-person treatment for many people. In fact, I personally think it has the advantages of increased accessibility. If a person feels too depressed to want to consistently leave their home to go to a therapy office, online therapy meets them halfway. Why make it harder?

What if I struggle with motivation?

That's common in depression. Therapy is not about expecting you to “try harder”; It provides support, structure, and a place to understand what is getting in the way. Even if the problem is with motivation and no other depressive symptoms, motivation builds like stairs: starting one small healthy habit makes the next bigger habit easier. Attending regular therapy sessions can be a way to get that process started.

You don't have to wait until things feel unbearable to seek support. A lot of people begin therapy simply because they are tired of carrying so much alone.
